Conducting the test requires some caution to avoid injury. Hold the unknown specimen firmly in one hand and place it on a flat surface. Then, press the known specimen against the unknown, being careful not to scratch yourself. Drag the reference specimen across the flat surface while pressing firmly, then place a point of the reference specimen against an unmarked surface of the unknown specimen.
